Introduction to South Africa

Enjoy 4 nights in Capetown, with included excursions, before you board the magnificent ‘Pride of Africa’ train and travel accross stunning South Africa to Matjiesfontein, Kimberley and Pretoria.

Travel slowly in luxury from Cape Town to the South African capital of Pretoria, normally at just 40mph, allowing enjoyment of the spectacular scenery from the open observation car. Rovos Rail comprises of coaches of 1950’s vintage. The steam locomotives are museum pieces used mainly for departure and arrivals at its private station in Pretoria. Otherwise, it is hauled by diesel or electric.

The vision of Cecil Rhodes at the end of the nineteenth century was a plan to link adjacent African possessions of the British Empire through a continuous rail link from the Cape to Cairo. Alas the dream never materialised but with the Victoria Falls Bridge completed in 1905 the southern section between Cape Town and the Zambezi came into operation.
