Introduction to Krakow & Auschwitz
Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with evidence showing settlements there since 20,000 BC. Legend has it that it was built on the cave of a dragon whom the mythical King Krak had slain.
Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extermination camp in the area, which at the time was under German occupation. The Auschwitz camps were a major element in the perpetration of the Holocaust; at least 1.1 million people were killed there, of whom over 90% were Jews.
The complex consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I, the administrative center; Auschwitz II (Birkenau), an extermination camp or Vernichtungslager; and Auschwitz III (Monowitz), a work camp.
The Polish government restored Auschwitz I and turn it into a museum honouring the victims of Nazism; Auschwitz II, where buildings were prone to decay, were preserved but not restored. Today, the Auschwitz I museum site combines elements from several periods into a single complex: for example the gas chamber at Auschwitz I (which had been converted into an air-raid shelter for the SS) was restored. The museum contains very large numbers of men’s, women’s and children’s shoes taken from their victims; also suitcases, which the deportees were encouraged to bring with them, and many household utensils.

Testimonial of our Krakow Insiders Tour
I want to say how much we enjoyed our recent trip to Krakow & Auschwitz and thank you again.
We found the transport always on time and the tour guides were excellent in their knowledge and the weather was Sunny (as the last time I was there it rained all the time)
The Hotel was so central and within easy walking distance of a lot of places, as my daughter and I love to walk also.
Thanks again. Joe & Sinead Fleming. Krakow & Auschwitz March ‘15
Just a note to let you know how much Sean and I enjoyed Krakow. We were met by our wonderful guide Annia at the airport. Hotel Logos was very nice, very clean, good location, friendly staff and very good breakfast. The only drawback was the bar was closed. Our trip to Auschwitz/Birkenau was excellent, we had a fabulous guide, who was passionate about his country’s history. It is a long trip, we left at 1.30 and arrived back at at 8.15. We also made the trip to the salt mines which was very interesting and well worth the visit. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Krakow is a lovely city , market square being the hub, where there is an abundance of restaurants, shops, churches etc.
Many thanks again for all your help and looking forward to another trip with Travel Escapes. Kind regard, Marie N, ~ Krakow & Auschwitz May ’15.
just a quick “go raibh maith agaibh” for service on our super trip to Krakow, “ANYA” the guide was very attentive – all our tours/internal travel went without a hitch-very courteous drivers etc.
We were “knocked out ” with the Auschwitz tour.
We would like to thank you and your colleagues for professional attention throughout
hopefully we can avail of your services again soon
