Flight Dublin to Helsinki (via Stockholm). Arrival in Helsinki and transfer to Hotel Glo Art**** or similar. Welcome meeting and free evening to explore the city. Overnight stay

Helsinki is truly located at the crossroads of Western and Eastern culture and it is reflected everywhere in the green and lively Finnish capital. The sightseeing tour takes us around the harbours, up central Mannerheim Street and by the Parliament Building, the Finlandia Hall, and the Sibelius Monument and for a visit at the famous Church-in the-Rock. In the afternoon an optional excursion is offered to the Seurassari Open-air Museum, an oasis in the midst of the citywith cottages, farmsteads and manors from all around Finland.

Today we continue eastbound to St. Petersburg. Shortly after crossing the border into Russia we arrive in Vyborg, where we take time for a short sightseeing tour and a photo-stop at Vyborg Castle. In the late afternoon we arrive in St. Petersburg and check-in at Hotel Sokos Vasilievsky**** or similar.

St. Petersburg is an amazing city. Its imperial palaces and museums enjoy worldwide fame, while the Neva River and the many canals have deservedly given the city the title “The Venice of the North”. During the morning sightseeing tour we get acquainted with all the splendours of the city: the Peter-Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Church of the Bleeding Savior, the Nevsky Convent and much more. The afternoon offers an optional excursion to Zarskoye Selo with the impressive Catherine’s Palace and the Amber Room, which vanished during World War II and was restored for St. Petersburg’s tri-centennial celebrations. In the evening enjoy an optional visit to the Nikolaevsky Palace with an exciting Russian folklore show and Russian “champagne” and snacks.

The morning is reserved for an optional visit to Peterhof, an uncontested masterpiece of the time of Peter the Great, with the impressive Grand Palace, Grand Cascade and Water Avenue and its wonderful parks. In the afternoon, an optional visit to the world-famous Hermitage Art Museum is offered. In the evening enjoy an optional Russian dinner at Restaurant Russian Kitsch.

The early morning is reserved for an optional St. Petersburg channel cruise. Around noon we go to the Moscow Railway Station and board the Sapsan high-speed train bound for Moscow. The train ride takes us through endless Russian landscapes along the River Volga. In the late afternoon we arrive to Moscow and check in at Hotel Holiday Inn Lesnaya**** (Hotel Park Inn Sadu**** for 2017) or similar.

The Mother of Russia, is a genuine Russian city with the Kremlin and its onion domed cathedrals. The dramatic changes over the last decade have made the city to one of the most dynamic metropolis in the world. The morning sightseeing tour includes the highlights of the vast city: the Red Square with St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Theatre Square with Bolshoi Theatre and Sparrow Hills with Moscow University and we visit the Kremlin grounds and one of the cathedrals. In the afternoon is offered an optional visit to the Moscow Metro including the historical stations on the Ring-Line and a guided stroll along the famous pedestrian Arbat Street. The evening offers an optional Moscow by night tour including an unforgettable river cruise with the White Flotilla.

The day offers an optional full day excursion to the quaint town of Sergiev Posad, where we visit the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual heart of the Russian Orthodox Church. The whole Lavra has been beautifully restored for the 700-years celebrations of the birth of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The evening offers an optional visit to the Old Russian Circus.

Testimonials about our Czar Route tour

Hi Toni

A quick one just to say how much Joe and I enjoyed our trip to Russia – and Finland too!

The agency you used was terrific and looked after our motley crew 100%! We were over two hours late arriving in Helsinki but the driver was there at the airport to meet us even if it was 1.30 in the morning for him. Eugenia was our guide and she played a blinder. She should be running the company instead of working for it.

I think we enjoyed the trip more than we had initially expected. The hotels were excellent and the three of us from Dublin gelled well with the others from USA Oz and New Zealand. I had imagined our Russian guides might be typically taciturn but the complete opposite was true.

Long story short but there was a bit of a hiccup in Helsinki and none of my luggage arrived in St Petersburg so I was a bit whiffy after 3 days without a change. Eugenia looked into it for me and went to some trouble to arrange for the bags to be collected by a driver and put on a train. Both the hotel and agency did a lot of shrugging of shoulders but it was persistence from Eugenia that got my luggage back and that included my brother’s iPhone 6 in my open sports bag !!

The high-speed train was really comfortable with plenty of drinks, sambos etc available. It was nice to hurtle through the forests in excess of 130 mph without fear of speed traps.

If you can, pass on these comments to Eugenia and her colleague Svetlana as well. We enjoyed the trip as did everyone else i should add.

Hi Eleanor

Just wanted to say a million thanks for all your help in organising my Czar Route holiday – 31st July ex Dublin. I absolutely loved it including the optional excursions which I did quite a few of in St. Petersburg particularly. The hotels were all of exceptional standard & the food, staff service etc.. second to none even when language was a barrier (in Russia).

The weather overall was very like home with the exception of Moscow (where we nearly collapsed with the heat & sunshine) but having said that it was really lovely to experience proper summer days & nights 🙂

I met wonderful people from all walks of life gathered together from across the globe. It made for great night time meal conversations & entertainment.

The tour guides were very knowledgeable on their subjects, customer orientated, approachable & very friendly which can make or break a group trip but it my case it certainly made it.

Finnair, BA & Aer Lingus I give 100% marks too for customer service plus great transfer facilities in the relevant hubs such as shopping, cafes, duty free etc….. I have one critical comment to make & that is to say how very disappointed I was to be on the late evening flight to Helsinki (@ 18.40) on the 31/07/2016. It was approx. 45 mins late departing (which I know is completely outside your control) but my time in that amazing city was way too short. I would be insistent with future trips to be put on an early flight the day of departure to make the most of my time.

I hope you’ve had a break yourself Eleanor. The travel industry is a very demanding one so time off is very necessary.

Looking forward to my next trip already!!!!!

Kindest regards

Mary, Czar Route, July 2016
