Introduction to The Berlin Insiders Tour

What is an insiders tour?

It’s more than just a name – our information is dynamic engaging and far beyond the pedestrian. You’ll get insight into what it’s like living in the New Berlin where East and West know no boundaries.

With the Insider Walking Tour we begin our adventure in the heart of Cold War west Berlin’s showcase of capitalism with the looming bombed out spire of the Memorial Church before us. Stroll into the history of the Teutonic Knights and Prussian Kings, through the Royal Hunting Grounds and stand before the Victory Column – marking the birth of the German nation and Europe as we know it today – unbridled Prussian military arrogance at its best!

Then follow the route of the Soviet attack up to the final battle ground of the Reichstag Parliament – crowned with Norman Foster’s glass dome, and by the futuristically charged Government Quarter and Federal Chancellory … then comes the East!

Pass over the line of the Death Strip, under the Brandenburg Gate, by the Holocaust Memorial, Hitler’s Bunker, Checkpoint Charlie, and finish with an account of the momentous events which led to the fall of the Wall while standing amongst the heart of the East German Government Quarter and the New Berlin.

Scandic Hotel Berlin – Potsdamer Platz – Opening October 2010

Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz is a Scandic hotel in a class of its own: it brings you to the very heart of Berlin. Inside you find Scandinavia in design and atmosphere in a warm and welcoming way. As you enter the lobby you encounter a crisp winter atmosphere with colours and shapes that remind of Nordic mountains.

The restaurant takes you to the Scandinavian summer reminding of a meadow with intense greenery. You hear the humming of bees and birds whistling. The lounge bar reflects autumn with earth colours and materials – a relaxing living room to be used both for hanging out or working. The hotel gets more intimate and homelike as you enter the rooms with the four seasons as a theme: choose between a Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter room.

The hotel is located in the central part of Berlin, at Potsdamer Platz, which is one of the most popular attractions of the New Berlin. With its mix of restaurants, shopping opportunities, theatre and cinemas, both Berliners and tourists are drawn in to pass the time. The area is also rich in history, the former wall almost in front of the hotel, Brandenburger Tor, The memorial of the jews and the German Parliament. The underground station (U2 line) is directly outside the hotel and you can easily reach the main train station by foot in just a few minutes.

Introduction to Germany in WWII

Explore the captivating and often disturbing history behind Germany in WWII, from Hitler’s rise to power, to his eventual suicide in a Berlin Bunker. As you travel from Berlin to Dresden and on to Munich, you will be given a fascinating insight into what was was undoubtedly the most costly war in the history of mankind.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fly Dublin – Berlin. Check into your hotel for a 3 night stay. In the afternoon enjoy an orientation tour of Berlin on foot. Evening at leisure.

Day 2: After breakfast in the hotel you will be taken on your “Insiders Tour of the Third Reich” walking tour. In the afternoon you will have an escorted tour to the Olympic Stadium.

Third Reich Berlin: Starting in the heart of west Berlin before the cragged spire of the bombed out Memorial Church, get a full description of: the ferocity of the Allied bombing campaign and the defence of the Nazi Reich Capital; the Cross of Coventry and the Madonna of Stalingrad; where the mammoth flak towers stood; and the experiences of those caught in the onslaught of the Soviet forces.

Olympic Stadium: When the Nazis came to power in Germany (1933), they decided to use the Olympic Games for propaganda purposes. With these plans in mind, Hitler ordered the construction of a great sports complex in Grunewald named the “Reichssportfeld” with a totally new Olympiastadion.

Day 3: After breakfast we will visit the Sachsenhasuen Concentration camp.

Sachsenhausen Camp: On the front entrance gates to Sachsenhausen is the infamous slogan Arbeit Macht Frei (German: “Work will set you free”). About 200,000 people passed through Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. Some 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition or pneumonia from the freezing winter cold. Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation. This tour is guided mainly by Nigel Dunkley former British Military attaché in Berlin and one of the leading military historians worldwide.

Day 4: After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer by coach to Dresden. On arrival in Dresden you will have time to check into your hotel and have lunch before your WWII City tour of Dresden.

Dresden: Dresden is widely known for the devastating and controversial Allied bombing campaign. US and Royal Air Force bombers dropped 3,900 tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs over 3 days in February 1945, destroying 13 square miles of the city. It caused a firestorm of such intensity many of the estimated 40,000 civilian casualties died of asphyxiation. American Kurt Vonnegut, who was a POW in Dresden during the firebombing, later memorialised the event in his novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

Day 5: After breakfast check out of your hotel and board your coach for Munich. On arrival in Munich check into your hotel for 3 nights. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 6: After breakfast you will be taken on your walking tour of Hitler’s Munich. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Hitler’s Munich: Our experienced guide will lead the way as we explore the dark side of Munich’s history as the birth place of Nazism. Follow the growth of the movement from its first mass meeting at the Hofbräuhaus, to its failed attempt to seize power at the Feldherrnhalle. We take you to the site of mass party rallies at Königsplatz and stop in the Hofgarten to talk about The White Rose resistance movement. The tour covers all important facts and sites that played a role in the origin of this black chapter, that ended with the beautiful city of Munich in ruins.

Day 7: After breakfast, board the coach for your tour to Dachau Concentration camp.

Dachau: Established in March 1933, the Dachau concentration camp was the first regular concentration camp established by the Nazis in Germany. Heinrich Himmler, in his capacity as police president of Munich, officially described the camp as “the first concentration camp for political prisoners.” In total, over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries were housed in Dachau of whom two-thirds were political prisoners and nearly one-third were Jews. 25,613 prisoners are believed to have died in the camp and almost another 10,000 in its subcamps, primarily from disease, malnutrition and suicide. In early 1945, there was a typhus epidemic in the camp followed by an evacuation, in which large numbers of the weaker prisoners died.

Day 8: Today you have the day at leisure to discover the brighter side of Munich, including Marienplatz with the New City Hall’s carillon (the Glockenspiel), the nice market Viktualienmarkt, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), and the German Museum (Deutsches Museum).

In the evening you will be collected from the hotel and transferred to Munich airport for your return flight to Dublin.

Introduction to Krakow & Auschwitz

Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with evidence showing settlements there since 20,000 BC. Legend has it that it was built on the cave of a dragon whom the mythical King Krak had slain.

Auschwitz :

Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extermination camp in the area, which at the time was under German occupation. The Auschwitz camps were a major element in the perpetration of the Holocaust; at least 1.1 million people were killed there, of whom over 90% were Jews.

The complex consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I, the administrative center; Auschwitz II (Birkenau), an extermination camp or Vernichtungslager; and Auschwitz III (Monowitz), a work camp.

The Polish government restored Auschwitz I and turn it into a museum honouring the victims of Nazism; Auschwitz II, where buildings were prone to decay, were preserved but not restored. Today, the Auschwitz I museum site combines elements from several periods into a single complex: for example the gas chamber at Auschwitz I (which had been converted into an air-raid shelter for the SS) was restored. The museum contains very large numbers of men’s, women’s and children’s shoes taken from their victims; also suitcases, which the deportees were encouraged to bring with them, and many household utensils.

Introduction to the Prague Insiders Tour

What is an insiders tour?

It’s more than just a name – our information is dynamic engaging and far beyond the pedestrian.

On our Citiescapes tour a friendly, knowledgeable guide takes us on a fascinating journey through the sightseeing highlights of this enchanting city, discovering the people, places and events that have shaped Prague the past 1000 years.

The Citiescapes tour starts in the medieval centre of Prague, exploring the area around the Old Town Square, before strolling onto the Jewish Quarter (Josefov), once the largest Jewish ghetto in Europe. Along the way we learn about the dramatic history, traditions and legends linked to this area of the city.

Next, we cross Charles Bridge, one of Europe’s oldest stone bridges, to reach ancient Mala Strana. Here we take a short tram ride up the hill, where upon a spectacular vista of the whole city opens up before us.

As we walk through the cobbled streets of Hradcany, we arrive at the grandest sight of all, Prague Castle, the largest medieval castle complex in Europe.

Your guide will bring the dramatic history of Prague Castle to life, as we explore St. Vitus Cathedral, where kings were once crowned, before paying a visit to charming Golden Lane, home of alchemists and goldsmiths.

Finally, we descend the Prague Castle steps to return to the historical centre.
