Introduction to the Tale of the Tiger

Ranthambore is the quintessential Rajasthan wildlife park. Dominated by a 1,000-year-old fort, the landscape is dotted with cupolas, temples and memorial stones all bearing witness to a varied and fascinating history. The mighty Mughal Emperor Akbar fought a battle here for control of the fort but today the tiger rules the thick forest gorges that surround it.

This magnificent feline, the national symbol of India, is represented in art, literature and folklore. Tales abound of the tiger’s prowess, elegance and glowing amber eyes. To hunt the tiger was against tribal beliefs but as hunting for sport became big business, to bag a tiger was considered the greatest challenge. With the invention of firearms, the odds were stacked in favour of man and the tiger population was decimated. This was the ‘Sport of Kings’ and when Queen Elizabeth II visited the park in the 1960s, it was to participate in a royal hunt organised by the Maharaja of Jaipur. When

President Clinton came here in the 1990s, it was to admire one of the world’s most successful conservation projects. Almost too late India had realised the very existence of the tiger was in jeopardy and with numbers becoming perilously low, government intervention was needed to curtail hunters and poachers alike. The tiger is still an endangered species but Ranthambore, the smallest of the nature reserves, gives the visitor a good chance to glimpse this elusive beast in the wild.

Introduction to A Namibian Journey

Exotic Namibia, one of the world’s newest nations which only elected its first president in 1989, is home to the world’s oldest and possibly most beautiful desert, the Namib.

Dominated by a massive mineral pan, the Etosha is one of Southern Africa’s finest and most important game reserves. Declared a National Park in 1907, it is home to around 550 species of mammal, reptile, bird and amphibian. A limited rain supply supports the Etosha Pan which, particularly during their winter months, concentrates the wildlife into specific areas, thus improving game viewing. Stay at one of the rest camps (normally Halali but on occasion Okaukuejo or Namutoni) which are unique in having floodlit waterholes and optional night game drives.

Adjoining Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, lying between the dramatic Atlantic coastline and desert dunes, offer an interesting contrast, the former reveals elaborate Germanic architecture, whilst the latter was once a British port and still has a cricket pitch!

Okonjima Lodge is the base for the AfriCat Foundation (as featured on the BBC and in Joanna Lumley’s ‘Cats’ programme), a non-profit organisation committed to long-term conservation and rescue of Namibia’s large carnivores, especially cheetahs and leopards (profits from its excellent accommodations go to the Foundation). Optional activities include ‘radiotracking’ leopards from the game viewing vehicles or visiting the ‘Cheetah Project’ which offers insight into their welfare work, with the opportunity to view rescued cheetahs.

Introduction to Abyssinia & The Blue Nile

Nothing quite prepares the traveller to Ethiopia for the breathtaking beauty of the country, its remarkable ancient history and its sheer diversity of peoples. A fiercely independent and highly idiosyncratic country, Ethiopia has never been successfully conquered or colonised and it boasted for a while the most powerful empire in Africa. Indeed, Ethiopia viewed itself as an empire until the second half of the 20th century when Emperor Haile Selassie claimed unbroken lineal descent from an alleged liaison between the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon.

Christianity, introduced as early as the 4th century, took strong root and still functions as a socially cohesive force in the Christian areas. Amongst its more dramatic achievements are the eleven 12th-century rockhewn subterranean churches of Lalibela and the ancient monasteries of Debre Libanos and Lake Tana. Its major claim to significance within the Christian world however, is its assertion that it holds the original Ark of the Covenant under guard and away from view at Axum. A further Ethiopian architectural curiosity are the castles of Gondar, constructed during the 17th to 19th centuries.

Scenically, dramatic mountains give way to the Great Rift Valley, to the forbidding desert-like wilderness of the Danakil Depression and Ethiopia’s largest lake, Tana, which feeds the Blue Nile. Recent political and social turmoil has perhaps obscured the fact that Ethiopia offers the more adventurous traveller an experience unlike any other and a welcome from generous and warm people.

Accommodation details

Addis Ababa – 2 nights – Ghion Hotel

Lalibela – 3 nights – Roha Hotel

Axum – 1 night – Hotel Yeha

Bahar Dar – 2 nights – Tana Hotel

Travel & Accommodation

The hotels used in Ethiopia are often dramatically and scenically located but most offer a standard of rooms, public areas and food, that while adequate and clean, is low by international standards with intermittent water supplies and some worn furnishings. Travel throughout the country works well with good roads and efficient internal air travel, although airport security is tight and can be time consuming. Internal flight schedules may be subject to change. The terrain for walking can be very rough, care should be taken and appropriate footwear worn.

Introduction to China the Beautiful

China’s conundrum is that while parts of the country are rushing ahead into the 21st century, never far away are areas which have remained unchanged for centuries. This will soon become evident to the traveller who embarks on this journey which encompasses China’s four corners. In Beijing, you may be surprised by the traffic, shopping malls and neon signs, but for the majority, the bicycle is still the cheapest and most efficient mode of transport. The imposing grandeur of the Forbidden City and Summer Palace and the mystical symmetry of the Temple of Heaven remain untouched by modernity whilst Shanghai’s racy image stems from the 1930s and 40s, the impressive buildings of the Bund are now expanding at an astounding pace.A feature of the itinerary is the cruise through the famous Three Gorges on the Yangtse River. Following the completion in 2003 of the second phase of the Yangtse Dam project, the higher water levels afford a new perspective and navigation is made easier. Nonetheless, the change is less than expected and the natural symmetry of the gorges is retained. A contrast to these natural phenomena is provided by the passage through the 5-stage ship lock of the world’s largest dam, one of the most spectacular feats of engineering undertaken in modern times.

The waterways of Eastern China also feature in the arrangement as south of Nanjing we travel through the fertile land of ‘fish and rice’ along the ancient Grand Canal to Suzhou. Whilst Suzhou is renowned for its canals, water gardens and silk production, the West Lake of Hangzhou with its landscaped island, temples and pavilions is one of China’s best known beauty spots. Visits are also made to the ancient capital of the Middle Kingdom, Xian, to view the Terracotta Warriors and the pastoral river landscapes around Guilin before concluding the tour in ‘One country, two systems’ Hong Kong.

Introduction to The Restoration Story

The political situation now allows the relaunch of this popular programme across the Levant, whilst new British Midland flights permit a more convenient itinerary flying into Damascus and out of Beirut and the introduction of 5-star hotels now adds additional comfort to this arrangement. Since the time of the Phoenicians the varied history of the Levant has seen the influence of Europe, Asia and Africa overlaid creating a fascinating archaeological and cultural heritage. Clashes between the Hittites and Egyptians, Romans and Persians, Crusaders and the Arab dynasties, Mamelukes and Ottomans have all left their mark. Recent excavations at the site of the Citadel in Aleppo reveal traces of civilisations as far back as the Hittites underneath Roman, Byzantine and Arabic remains.

Whilst earlier restoration in Syria included some arguably misguided reconstruction, the focus today has shifted to using original materials to prevent further decay. Indeed the company of our local representative in Aleppo has been involved with the restoration of the Citadel itself, the castle Qala’at Salah ad-Din and old Damascene and Aleppo houses. Its manager, who received an award for his work in the saving of the Old City of Aleppo, recently delivered a lecture on ‘Old Aleppo’ at the Royal Geographical Society at the behest of the British Syrian Society and his guides are particularly well-versed in this subject.

In Beirut the pressing need to restore the central zone has restricted exploration of the Roman remains below the city uncovered during the restoration process. It has nonetheless recreated a thriving metropolis with an attractive downtown area that is in radical contrast to the well-preserved Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Crusader remains at Byblos and the evocative temple of Baalbeck, the ‘Sun City’ of the ancient world and considered the most impressive and important Roman site of the Middle East. The richness of this itinerary is reflected in the fact that it includes no fewer than five sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list: Palmyra, Baalbeck, Byblos and the ancient cities of Aleppo and Damascus.

In Damascus, we have arranged a special dinner with music and dance in a traditional house, which is now a restaurant.

Day 11: Acapulco, Mexico: Arrive 08.00 Sail 17.00

This has to be one of the world’s most famous beach resorts, where the action continues around the clock. By day, the horseshoe-shaped bay is the place to see and be seen, while evenings light up with nightclubs, bars and fabulous restaurants. Don’t miss the cliff divers of La Quebrada, soaring off 136-foot-high cliffs into Pacific Ocean waves – it’s extra spectacular at night.

Day 12: Cruise the Pacific

Introduction to the New York to Bahamas Cruise

Set sail from the vibrant metropolis of New York to the delightful shores of the Bahamas on this Citiescapes Cruise. After spending a night in heart of New York, board Norwegian Gem, and discover Port Canaveral, Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Lines private island. This promises to be a delightful cruise and should not be missed.

Itinerary

Day 1: New York, USA:

On arrival in New York you will be transferred to your hotel for a 1 night stay. Take some time to enjoy the vibrant sights and sounds of the city

Day 2: New York, USA: Sail 16.00

After a morning at leisure you will be transferred to the port to board Norwegian Gem, operated by NCL Freestyle Cruising. After settling in to your stateroom head out on deck to enjoy the sights of the city from the water as you leave on your cruise.

Day 3: Cruise the Atlantic

Your first day onboard is spent cruising down the American East Coast, away from New York and on to your first port of call, Port Canaveral, Florida. Take some time to enjoy the many onboard facilities available on Norwegian Gem, or just sit back and relax.

Day 4: Port Canaveral (Orlando), USA: Arrive 12.00 Depart 22.00

Port Canaveral, Florida is the gateway to many delightful sights, including the many theme parks of Orlando and the famous Kennedy Space Centrr. Forget fly-cruise, think space-cruise, as Port Canaveral is just minutes from Kennedy Space Center, where you can spend a fascinating day following the progress of the space race. An hour’s drive brings you to Orlando and all the theme park fun and excitement you can handle, while nature lovers may prefer an airboat adventure on the protected wetlands of the Everglades.

Day 5: Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas: Arrive 11.00 Sail 18.00

The Island Resort of Great Stirrup Cay is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line and is private to Norwegian Cruise Line guests. Home to sandy beaches, palm trees and clear waters in a peaceful cove… and you, for one day of sheer beachside indulgence. Snooze the day away in a hammock, enjoy an island barbecue, take out a kayak or sailboat and check out the local inhabitants – schools of madly colourful fish – on a guided snorkelling tour over the reef.

Day 6: Nassau, Bahamas: Arrive 08.00 Depart 18.00

Although Columbus passed this way, it was the British who made their mark on New Providence island building forts to protect their possessions from pirates. Some things don’t change and you could still find treasure snorkelling for pearls at Pearl Island; but some things do and on aptly named Paradise Island, discover Atlantis, one of the most fantastic resort hotels imaginable.

Day 7: Cruise the Atlantic

Leave the Bahamas and the Caribbean behind today as you start your cruise North, heading for your final port of call, New York City. After your time enjoying the Caribbean, this gives you a perfect chance to enjoy the restaurants, games and activities onboard, or just sit back and watch the world go by.

Day 8: Cruise the Atlantic

Your final day onboard sees you continuing your cruise back to New York. Take this time to pick up some onboard souvenirs, pamper yourself in the spa and salon and enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many fabulous restaurants.

Day 9: New York, USA: Arrive 09.00

You arrive back in New York in the early morning, with disembarkation starting after breakfast. Enjoy some last minute shopping in New York before your transfer to the airport and your return flight to Dublin.

Day 10: Dublin, Ireland

You arrive back in Dublin in the early morning after your overnight flight from New York.

Accommodation details

Club Praia Da Oura – Praia da Oura

Club Praia da Oura is the most popular and best known holiday resort on the Algarve as far as Irish holidaymakers are concerned. Boasting a superb range of facilities and entertainment shared with its sister complexes, Oura Praia. It is situated on an extensive site beside the beach and consists of several separate blocks stepped up from ground level to 4/5 storeys, which do not give a high rise effect and blend into the natural terrain.

Located directly on Oura beach it is 200m from the centre of Montechoro. Like most seaside areas in the Algarve, the land in Praia da Oura slopes quite sharply back from the beach area and has some steep slopes and steps which would make it unsuitable for persons with restricted mobility.
