Introduction to The Venetian Lagoon

Explore the floating city of Venice, the enchanting Venetian Lagoon and the river Po on this cruise. Cruising aboard the delightful MS Bellissima, you will have a perfect opportunity to discover the delightful history and culture of the Venetian region in a most relaxing way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Venice:

On arrival in Venice you will be transferred to the quay to board MS Bellissima. You then have an evening to explore.

Day 2: Venice:

This beautiful city on its lagoon in the Adriatic attracts huge numbers of visitors from all over the world. After Breakfast an optional guided walk takes us first to St. Mark’s Square, where we admire the impressive Byzantine portal of St. Mark’s basilica. Our subsequent visit to the Doge’s Palace reveals more of the city’s history and finally we take an opportunity to watch the colourful world of the square. This afternoon we offer a gondola cruise along the many canals, offering fine views of the palace facades. (Bookable only onboard)

Day 3: Venice (08.30) – Chioggia (11.30 – 19.00) – Taglio di Po (23.00):

Around midday we arrive in Chioggia in the southern part of the Venetian lagoon. After Lunch we offer an optional excursion to Padua. This is one of Italy’s oldest cities and its many medieval buildings testify to a glorious past. Our guided walk takes us through the narrow streets and tree-lined arcades. We visit the 13th century basilica of St. Anthony and the medieval Town Hall of the Palazzo della Ragione. The ship overnights in Taglio di Po.

Day 4: Taglio di Po (08.00) – Polesella (12.00):

This morning we invite you to relax on the Sun Deck as we cruise on the river Po to Polesella, where we arrive around midday. This is the starting-point for our optional excursion to Verona. Verona is famous as the setting for Shakespeare’s tragic love story ”Romeo and Juliet“, and for opera-lovers there is the world-famous operatic festival. The city has much to offer and is reckoned to be one of Italy’s loveliest. You cannot fail to be won over by its romantic charm.

Day 5: Polesella (19.00) – Venice (07.00):

Today’s optional excursion takes us to Ferrara, a Renaissance town closely linked to the ancient, aristocratic House of Este. The impressive buildings, which include the Este family homes, together with the many art treasures have ensured that Ferrara has an UNESCO World Heritage listing. We visit the well-preserved medieval town centre with its fine buildings. During the evening we set sail back to Venice.

Day 6: Venice (07.00):

This morning we take an optional cruise to the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano was once the home of the Venetian aristocracy, today it is known for its glassware. Originally the glass-blowers lived in Venice before moving production to the island in the late 13th century. During our visit we either watch the craftsmen at work or take a stroll through the attractive streets on the search for a nice souvenir. Burano is most attractive with its colourful houses and idyllic squares. This former fishing village is famous for making needlepoint and lace.

Day 7: Venice:

Disembarkation begins this morning after breakfast, when you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home to Dublin.

Accommodation details

MS Bellissima

The MS BELLISSIMA, with its graceful, classical lines, entered service in 2004 and has been much admired for its elegance and ambience. The tastefully designed cabins, particularly those on the Upper Deck with their French windows, and the spacious public rooms are much appreciated by all. The Sun Deck invites guests to relax, either in a deck chair, at the bar or in the whirlpool. The friendly crew and excellent food are also rated very highly.

The cabins

The cabins are 2-bed outside cabins, all fitted out in an identical style and measuring around 13 square metres. There are individual air-conditioning controls, shower and toilet, radio, satellite-TV, hair dryer, safe and telephone. Those cabins on the Upper Deck have a full-length, opening French window, whereas the windows on the Main Deck do not open. Each cabin has two twin foldaway beds, which are made up each evening by the ship’s crew. During the day the beds serve as two small settees. The deluxe cabin has both a double bed and a settee.

Facilities on board

Panorama Restaurant, Panorama Bar Lounge, Sun deck with an awning and whirlpool, chairs, tables, deck chairs and a bar

Medical

A Doctor is within easy reach ashore.

Restaurant / Cuisine

Meals are served at a single sitting in the spacious Panorama Restaurant. We have a highly professional and friendly service team. The menus contain international cuisine as well as traditional dishes from the countries along our route.

On-board program

Theme evenings, quizzes, bingo and live music ensure that everyone is entertained. Books, board games and packs of cards are also available.

Payment on board

The on-board currency is the Euro. At the end of the cruise you can settle your on-board account either in cash (Euro) or with a credit card (Mastercard / VISA).

Life on board

The atmosphere on board is informal. We recommend comfortable clothing, a jumper for cooler evenings and stout footwear for the excursions ashore. We ask that you dress a little more smartly for dinner. Our Cruise Team is at your disposal during the whole cruise with help and advice. This is a non-smoking vessel (smoking is permitted only on the Sun Deck).

Introduction to China the Beautiful

China’s conundrum is that while parts of the country are rushing ahead into the 21st century, never far away are areas which have remained unchanged for centuries. This will soon become evident to the traveller who embarks on this journey which encompasses China’s four corners. In Beijing, you may be surprised by the traffic, shopping malls and neon signs, but for the majority, the bicycle is still the cheapest and most efficient mode of transport. The imposing grandeur of the Forbidden City and Summer Palace and the mystical symmetry of the Temple of Heaven remain untouched by modernity whilst Shanghai’s racy image stems from the 1930s and 40s, the impressive buildings of the Bund are now expanding at an astounding pace.A feature of the itinerary is the cruise through the famous Three Gorges on the Yangtse River. Following the completion in 2003 of the second phase of the Yangtse Dam project, the higher water levels afford a new perspective and navigation is made easier. Nonetheless, the change is less than expected and the natural symmetry of the gorges is retained. A contrast to these natural phenomena is provided by the passage through the 5-stage ship lock of the world’s largest dam, one of the most spectacular feats of engineering undertaken in modern times.

The waterways of Eastern China also feature in the arrangement as south of Nanjing we travel through the fertile land of ‘fish and rice’ along the ancient Grand Canal to Suzhou. Whilst Suzhou is renowned for its canals, water gardens and silk production, the West Lake of Hangzhou with its landscaped island, temples and pavilions is one of China’s best known beauty spots. Visits are also made to the ancient capital of the Middle Kingdom, Xian, to view the Terracotta Warriors and the pastoral river landscapes around Guilin before concluding the tour in ‘One country, two systems’ Hong Kong.

Introduction to Laos & Cambodia

This new arrangement offers a fascinating insight into little-known Indo-China, ideal for those who have visited Vietnam and want to explore further this part of the world. Much of this journey is undertaken by river through lush verdant landscapes, beginning in Northern Thailand and crossing into Laos. Meander down the Mekong River, Laos’ main thoroughfare, witnessing an abundance of local activity, not surprising as most of the population live along its banks. Charming and majestic Luang Prabang was recently voted top city by Wanderlust readers, known for its slow pace of life, temples and monasteries. The lesser known area of Si Phan Don – the ‘4,000 islands’ in Southern Laos is surrounded by the mighty Mekong with spectacular waterfalls and the famous yet elusive Irrawaddy dolphins.

In Cambodia, Siem Reap is the base to explore one of the wonders of the world – the fabled temples of Angkor. In the capital city Phnom Penh, once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’, its ancient heritage now contrasts its French colonial past and its still recent memories of the Khmer Rouge regime.

Introduction to King Fuad’s Nile Steamer

For many, the image of a Nile cruise was set by the classic 1978 film of Agatha Christie’s atmospheric and evocative mystery ‘Death on the Nile’. With an all-star cast which included Peter Ustinov, David Niven and Bette Davis, it recreated a leisurely turn-of-the-century sailing on a Nile paddle steamer. One such vessel which remains in service today is the SS Karim. Previously retained for private use by the Kings and Presidents of Egypt, the SS Karim is now reserved exclusively and very successfully for the guests of Citiescapes. Accommodating just 30 travellers in some comfort, this is a rare opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the river and the ancient civilisation of Egypt in an atmosphere of period elegance – almost in the style of a ‘house party’ from earlier times. The travel writer Jan Etherington enthusiastically described the SS Karim in her ‘Luxury Ride to Luxor’ article in ‘The Sunday Telegraph’ as ‘the oldest, slowest and smallest passenger boat on the river – and also the most elegant’. This charming vessel has proved extremely popular with our clients in the past and early booking is recommended.

Those who rediscovered ancient Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries enjoyed magical overnight stays and this has prompted us to arrange private evening access to the Luxor temple, enhanced by striking illumination, to savour the unique night-time atmosphere. A private reception has been arranged at the temple exclusively for the guests of Citiescapes. Enjoy a cocktail served by staff in pharaonic uniform at the illuminated Luxor Temple before strolling through the temple unimpeded by other visitors. A recording of Verdi’s Aida, once staged in the temple, will provide a musical background to the occasion and local musicians will play the Egyptian ‘takht’ music. Note: During May-Oct, a cocktail reception at the Old Winter Palace followed by a visit to the illuminated Luxor Temple.

Introduction to Russia Uncovered

In recent years interest has increased in the fine concept of utilising a cruise vessel to view Russia’s two main cities and the magical towns along the Russian waterways with their medieval kremlins, fortified monasteries and churches in surroundings remote from the modern world.

Both cities are linked as rivals in history as Moscow, the first capital of Russia from the early 15th century until 1712 when Tsar Peter the Great moved his capital to the newly created city of St. Petersburg on ground that was little more than bleak swamp, did not to regain its status as capital until 1918. The MS Yesenin is our base for this arrangement, connecting these two great artistic centres. As we navigate the Neva, Svir and Volga rivers, lakes Ladoga and Onega, the White Lake and Moscow/Volga canals, the ‘real’ Russia is discovered.

The intricate system of waterways has a beauty that is hard to describe. Serene, peaceful and timeless with silver birch and pine forests, sandy shores, calm flowing water and spectacular late sunsets. In these realms of the ‘White Nights’, calls will be at such historic cities as Uglich, one of the cities of the Golden Ring, Yaroslavl and Goritzy. These magical cities of Holy Russia still preserve their medieval kremlins (citadels), fortified monasteries and churches in surroundings remote from the modern world.

A visit to Kizhi Island in Lake Onega reveals the magnificent Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 shimmering grey domes in three tiers.

The ship’s Scandinavian tour leaders provide all information on board, and sees to it that our guests have a pleasant holiday. This ship holds about 100 less passengers than most Russian ships of the same size, therefore common areas onboard are more spacious. All meals are taken in the ship’s restaurant serving local and tasty food, adapted to western people. There is entertainment on board several evenings during the cruise. MS Surikov also has a large lounge, bar, a small souvenir shop, laundry service and medical facilities. On the sun deck, there are chairs and tables.
